Abstract

"This research is trying to answer the problem regarding Ludwig van Beethoven's music and the feeling of inferiority of an individual who can play and likes his music. The theories used are the theory of Ludwig van Beethoven's music and Alfred Adler's theory of individual psychology regarding feeling of inferiority. In general, the theory of Ludwig van Beethoven's music presents that for Beethoven, music was not mere entertainment, but a moral force capable of creating a vision of higher ideals. His music directly reflects his powerful, tortured personality. The music ‘heard' by his poor hearing, turn out to be able to prevent Beethoven's yearning to end his life. Moreover it has made Beethoven to become an architect in music of classical period who was unsurpassed in his ability to create large-scale structures in which every note and emotion. Without being realized, the music being created by Beethoven has become a part of life of an individual who plays and likes his music. Indirectly the music might also affect the feeling of inferiority of that individual. This research, which used an interview method and observation, proceeded for one week in May of year 2000. The respondents in this research consisted of two men and two women who could play and liked Beethoven's music. The result of this research shows that Ludwig van Beethoven's music is, in fact, carries therapeutic effect toward the feeling of inferiority of the respondents. Although certain respondents expressed that listening and playing Beethoven's music would not solve the problems that they were facing, but at least it would ease the problems. The existence of support and encouragement given by parents is also one factor that helps the respondents to overcome their feeling of inferiority. With reference of the theory of individual psychology regarding feeling of inferiority by Alfred Adler, each respondent has the capacity to compensate the feeling of inferiority at another field in his life. Certain respondents expressed that with an advantage they had in the field of music, would lead them to be more convinced of the abilities they had inside. Despite this advantage, all respondents wanted to do the best and most useful thing for themselves in order to overcome their feeling of inferiority so that they would not feel that they were less able if compared to others in future. Finally, it is advised to every parents to keep on giving the support and encouragement to children who experience the feeling of inferiority. For the individual, it is advised to strengthen their ability in one of the field that he is capable of and also to listen to Beethoven's classical music. As for the institution and for the professional that handle therapeutic music, it is advised to play Beethoven's classical music to individuals who experience the feeling of inferiority and other problems. Furthermore to any continuance researches, it is advised to continue research regarding the relation of emotional aspects between Ludwig van Beethoven and the individuals who can play and like his music, and to continue other researches regarding the issue of individual culture's background."
