Abstract

"Experiencing physical and sexual abuse is a very difficult thing for everyone, especially to a young girl. The experience will , become a traumatic life experience, which tends to influence her growth process. This kind of traumatic life experience may influence a young girl, as a street child, to do free sex and prostitution when she grows up as a teenager. The aim of this research is trying to answer how do the impact ‘of childhood traumatic life experience such as physical and sexual abuse being experienced by female street children influence their decision to live as prostitutes? This research use two main theories that are based on the theory of Magill (1996) and Rathus, Nevid, & Fichner-Rarthus (1993). Both ofthe theories describe that physical and sexual abuse create broad and enduring psychological impact to a person, and influence the person’s social and emotional development. Victims of the abuse acts would tend to have low self esteem, nervous attitude, depression, sexual promiscuity, and become drug addict. The theories also mentioned that psysical and sexual abuse during childhood tend to lead a woman to become a prostitute. The methods being used in this research were depth interview and observation and were conducted in the month of October and November 1999. Subjects were consisted of four 14 years old girls who lived as street children, experiencedphysical and sexual abuse, and involved in prostitution. The result of this research was in support to both theories and concluded that the psychological impactof physical and sexual abuse during childhood pushed young girls to become prostitutes when they grow up as street children."
