Abstract

One of the developmental tasks of young adult is to establish a marriage. But nowadays, more and more young adult women prefer cohabiting to getting married. Cohabitation is a life style of unmarried heterosexual couples, but they are living together. On the Eastern cultural society, women who decide to engage in premarital sexual will be considered as shameful women. This research is aimed at discovering motives of young adulthood women in choosing to cohabit with their boyfriends despite all the negative responds from their environment. There were 6 subjects participated in this research. They were young adult single women aged 20-34 years who live in Jakarta, with education at least junior high school, and they have been cohabitating with their boyfriends at least 10 months. Data was collected by using depth interview. Analysis data had been done by using qualitative method. Results indicated that all subjects can fulfill their physiological needs in cohabiting. But only five of them can fulfill their safety and love and belongingness needs. And none of them can achieve their self actualization. It was found also from the research that after all the subjects decided to cohabit, they have been experiencing lots of losses and unhappy-turmoil life.
