Abstract

Drawing and painting could be utilized as an instrument for self-expression. Drawing and painting themes and colors have specific meanings to patients. Schizophrenic patients could gain benefits by expressing themselves through drawing and painting activities, since they tend to have difficulties to organize their verbal expressions. There are various themes and colors in schizophrenic patients' drawings and paintings, which reflect the dynamics of the patients' personality expressed through signs and symbols in their art expression. This research is aimed at exploring drawing and painting as an indicator of the dynamic of personality of some individuals who suffer from schizophrenia. Jung has mentioned that art expression was associated with the unconsciousness. One could express the feelings though paintings. According to Jung, a person's personality was integrated when the thoughts, feeling and behavior of an individual was well integrated, and one might reflect this through drawings and paintings. Because, drawings and paintings indicated one's personality integration. Data collection was obtained by collecting the patients' drawings as well as through interview and observation. There were 8 subjects participated in this research, 4 males and 4 females with age range of 24-48. Qualitative analysis was used to explore the dynamics of the personality of the artists and its association with the art expression. Result indicated that their drawings reflect
