Abstract
Beside singlehood's positive and negative aspects, there are several reasons for one to remain single. However, society expects women to marry rather than to remain single. Javanese women's conflict is due to their parents' ultimate cultural duty to take their children into marriage. Children show their respect to their parents by helping them fulfill their life-task. Being single becomes dilemmatic for Javanese women, even if they chose to remain single to take care of the family. The research was held in Surakarta by using interview technique toward six single woman participants, aged 40 and beyond. Based on the research, all participants want to marry in order to fulfill their parents’ hope. Participants were hoping not to get any pressures due to their singlehood. They all try to be more realistic due to their age and to continue their life.
