Abstract

Conflicts occur frequently in business environment, whether it is caused by differences or rivalry in job matters. Every individual who are facing conflicts will always try to overcome the conflict. There are five ways hOW we can overcome conflicts, they are: avoiding, competing, accommodating, compromising, and collaborating. How an individual will overcome conflicts can be foretold by his or her personality. There are two types of personality. Both have important implication to a company. These personalities are known as type A personality and type B personality. Therefore, the issue in this research is whether there are differences between type A personality and type B personality in overcoming conflicts. ln explanation to the issue, the researcher used inferential comparative study as the research method. Subjects in this research are 40 persons as tester and 200 persons as main research. Subjects are those who are working as salespersons for PT. Asuransi AIG Lippo Life in Jakarta. Two types of questionnaires are delivered to the subjects. These questionnaires are type A personality andtype B personality questionnaires and overcoming conflicts questionnaires. After the questionnaires have been returned, the researcher performed a calcutationusing _chi square method and SPSS 9.01 for Windows software. The result of the calculation is 78 = 11,004, p < 0,05 (p = 0,027). The conclusion of this calculation is that there are differences between type A personality and type B personality in overcoming conflicts. Also, from the calculation, we find out that 15 persons or 18.5% out of 46 persons of type A personality use collaborating in overcoming their conflicts. And 10 persons or 12.3% out of 35 persons of type B personality use accommodating in overcomlng their conflicts
