Abstract

Novice is a pre requisite stage for anybody who wishes to live as a monk in order to reach Nibbana. Changes in lifestyle from ordinary person to become a monk require well prepared mental readiness. As single monk candidate, novice has to let go every possible worldly attachment. The process of desert attachments produces psychological dynamics at many different stages. This research is to investigate the psychological dynamics of the process and to picture the releasing stages of the novice in passing into monk. Theoretical base wereconducted by using Tart's, Plutchik's, and Abhidhamma's theory of emotion. Data collection for the two subjects was conducted through unstructured close personal interview and data analysis was conducted by qualitative approach. The results show that they have similar phases in releasing attachments. Prior to becoming novice, both subjects truly enjoyed the life as ordinary people. At transition period, the most occurred emotion was sadness as a result of thef , requirement to depart from family. After become novices, both subjects obtain a new higher level of self awareness of worldly life and feel fulfilled with the present stage of life.
