Abstract

Ability in solving word problem in mathematics is important because learning mathematics is learning to solve problem and is a form of the application of the knowledge that have been obtained in advance. One of the strategies to enhance the ability of solving problems by applying Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) techniques, which is the study group with members of four to five students. STAD principles included: Positive Interdependence, Individual Accountability, Equal Participation, and Simultaneous Interaction. The purpose of this research was to test the effectiveness of STAD in improving the capability of completing word problem in the topic of addition and subtraction in math lesson. The method used is the method of experiment One Group Pre test-Post Test Design. Participants of the research was student from Grade 2A, Elementary X, Kalideres, about 20 peoples. The technique of sampling with purposive sampling. The research instrument includes STAD learning modules in the form of wor problems material, questionnaire that is compiled by writer is based on theories from Kagan, and also with sheets of observations. The results of the study is to test hypotheses done with a Pair Sample T Test. Result shows (t = -4,618, p< .01) that STAD techniques is effective in improving the capability of completing word problem in the topic of addition and subtraction in Grade 2 (Elementary level).
