Abstract
Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) are a type of game with internet networks that require social interaction. MMORPGs are now a very popular game among teenagers. During this transition period teenagers become closer to their peers. Through online games, teens can fulfill their social needs. Adolescents aged 11-20 years are at the stage of identity vs. identity confusion and are looking for their identity and social status in the community. This study tries to look at the relationship of personality traits with motivation to play online games of MMORPGs in late adolescents. The subjects of this study were 203 adolescents aged 18-22 years and playing MMORPGs. The results of this study indicate that there is a relationship between personality traits and motivation to play online games. The study found a relationship on the dimensions of extraversion with relationship motivation (r = 0.266, p <0.05) and achievement motivation (r = 0.176, p <0.05), and the relationship to the dimensions of agreeableness with relationship motivation (r = 0.192, p = 0.006). While the dimensions of openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism have no relationship with motivation to play online games.
