Abstract
This research wants to explore one of the important factors, that is emotional intelligence which cause young adult men commit dating violence. This study was conducted to get an overview of emotional intelligence in Dating Violence (KDP). One of task of individual development in early adulthood is build a relationship with the opposite sex in courtship, as preparation before marriage. Violence in courtship if not tackled at this stage, it may continue into the marriage. So the characteristics of the perpetrators need to be investigated in earlier stage. This study uses the theory of emotional intelligence (Goleman, 2002a). This study explores the five dimensions of emotional intelligence consists of: recognizing emotions, managing emotions, motivating oneself, the ability to empathize and the ability to build relationships with other people. Dating violence occurs generally on stage “Consummate Love” (Berscheid & Berndt, 2004). At this stage they have commitment and contain a strong affection. This study uses method of qualitative techniques with open ended interview questions. Subjects of this study were 3 males aged 18-25 years. Data collection was conducted from April to June 2013 in Jakarta. Results of this study found that men who commit dating violence are lack emotional intelligence, especially in the dimension of recognizing emotions when the feeling is in progress.
