Abstract
" Verbal abuse is a communication intended to cause psychological pain to another person. During this time parents often unwittingly commit verbal abuse on children and it will have an impact on self-esteem. Self-esteem is an evaluation of the individual against himself in a positive or negative. The aim of this research is to know correlation between perceptions of verbal abuse and self-esteem in adolescents. Three hundred ten subjects participated in this research, age 18-21 years. The method used in this research is quantitative methods with a non-experimental. The results of this study showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between perception of verbal abuse and self-esteem (r = -0.255, p = 0.000). These results show that the higher verbal abuse happened, the lower self-esteem obtained. From the results of additional analyzes on the correlation perception of verbal abuse against the various dimensions of self-esteem, showed that the dimension of family relationships have a higher value than the other dimensions. "
