Abstract
Social competence is the initial foundation for further development of the child in the future in order to be accepted in the social environment. This study tried to assess maternal perceptions of social competence following his early childhood. Analytical methods used to analyze the problem of descriptive statistics. This study included 40 mothers and their children are following the early childhood living in a disposal area of East Jakarta. Data is collected in March 2012. The conclusions of this study is that maternal perceptions of social competence in children tend to be positive. On communication skills, socialization, the ability to share, the ability to listen to a speech and nonverbal understanding there are still some children who have not mastered these skills. From the results of crosstabulation, mothers who have daughters have a relatively high perception of social competence in children compared with mothers who have sons.
