Abstract

"This study aims to look at the relationship between social interest and ethnic identity in Chinese adolescents in Cirebon City. Social interest is an innate power struggle of individuals who formed due to feelings of inferiority are compensated in a positive way so that the individual is no longer just concerned with his personal interests, but also the interests of the people (Adler, 1927, cited in Feist & Feist, 2006). Ethnic identity is a construct that includes interest and commitment, and social activities within their ethnic group (Phinney, 1990, quoted in Tarakanita, 2008). Phinney developed the concept of Marcia's identity. The categorization is Achieved, Search or Moratorium, Foreclosure, and Diffusion identity (cited in Santrock, 2006). The research was conducted in SM1 High School Cirebon. The criteria of respondents are derived from the ethnic Chinese with an age range of 10 to 20 years. The number of respondents in this study is 161 peoples. This study uses a convenience sampling technique and using the Pearson correlation test. The results of the Pearson correlation test (r) = +0.157 and Sig (p) = 0.047 < 0.05. Based on these results, then Ho is rejected and H1 accepted, meaning there are positive and significant relationship between Chinese ethnic identity and social interests in the young generation in Cirebon City. "
