Abstract

Based on a sample of 307 adolescents as senior high school students recruited from religion-based and public schools in Padang, this study explored how authoritarian personality and religious fundamentalism related to prejudice. The present study has included Religious Fundamentalism Scale (RFS) scale besides Right-Wing Authoritarianism (RWA) scale to measure personal characteristics which were regarded as psychosocial factor have been framing the attitude toward person in inter-cultural context (ethnic) and religion diversity which was uncovered by using Attitudes Toward Specific Ethnic Groups Inventory. With the samples that come from several ethnic backgrounds, this study also explored an interaction model in finding out the impact of demographic factors on inter-ethnic prejudice. Regression analyses indicate the superior explanatory power of the religious fundamentalism, right-wing authoritarian personality and past experiences in comparison to other measures of demographic factors in explaining level of prejudice. Results of an ANOVA indicate significant differences in inter-ethnic prejudice in relation to religious belief and schools. This study suggests that government and other education stakeholders should seriously question and intervene against the rise of intolerance at public school amidst of political democratization in Indonesia.
