Abstract
The purpose for this research is to give a visual representation to the loneliness experienced by young adult single mothers with the use of paintings. This study was conducted with a mix of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Questionnaires from UCLA’s Loneliness Scale Version 3 were used for the quantitative method, while interviews and observations were used as a qualitative method. The subject for this study involves six single mothers aged 22 to 37 years old who experiences extreme loneliness. During the seven-month period of May 2014 to November 2014 the research concluded that the feeling of loneliness expressed in the paintings drawn by single mothers was visually revealed through the subjects hopes and desires. Three of the six subjects painted through free expression showing their future hopes and desires. The remaining subjects painted through virtual expression with the theme of naturalism. It is found that single mothers who experienced loneliness used more cool colours like blue, green purple and pink on their paintings. More neutral colours such as brown and black were also used.
