Abstract

As time goes by, practical packaging is widely used as a protector of electronic devices and food wrappers. The application of practical packaging is one of them using Expanded Polystyrene (EPS). EPS is a hazardous waste because its decomposition requires a very long time and there are still very few people or parties who can process and recycle this waste into something that has value benefits. This research was conducted to compare the mix between conventional asphalt and additional asphalt EPS on Marshall characteristics. In addition, its also to find out the effect of asphalt mixture with EPS waste using the Marshall method so that it can obtain EPS waste utilization solutions. This research is using experimental method. The EPS used is the one that passed filter no. 16 (1.18 mm). the research begins with the design of mixed gradations. EPS is mixed with bitumen at a temperature of ± 150oC and stirred constantly for 2 hours. Mixing coarse, fine, filler, and asphalt aggregates is carried out on the stove until its evenly mixed and crushed. Marshall testing is done by comparing Marshall values with General Specifications of the Directorate General of Highways Edition 2010 (revision 3) Division 6 for AC-WC mixture. After that, RMS testing is done by immersing 30 minutes ad 24 hours using KAO. The results showed that the pavement mixture using EPS still met the Marshall and RMS requirements. KAO at EPS level 0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% respectively 5.7%, 6.05%, 6.1%, and 6.2%. the RMS value obtained from all EPS levels is required, which is above 90%. Keywords : conventional asphalt, EPS waste, Marshall testing, RMS.
