Abstract

Hypoxia is the condition of oxygen deprivation in the cells that causes an increase of oxidants. If the oxidants levels more than antioxidants level, oxidative stress will occur that cause damage and cell death, such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, and congestive heart failure, so antioxidants are needed to prevent damage. Antioxidants can be formed from inside the body (catalase) and outside the body (Aegle marmelos fruit). This research were done to determining the effect of administration of Aegle marmelos fruit extract on the catalase’s specific activity in rat’s blood and heart induced by chronic systemic hypoxia (8% O2 and 92% N2). This research used experimental method. Test performed in vitro: total capacity of antioxidant (Blois), toxicity (BSLT), flavonoid (Woisky&Salatino), phenolic (Singleton&Rossi) and in vivo: the catalase’s specific activity (Mates) with sample were divided into 2 groups, the group of rat given Aegle marmelos fruit extract and the control group (each groups were divided into 4 subgroups, normoxia, 3 days, 7 days, and 14 days of hypoxia). Histopathological examination with HE staining. The result was obtained that Aegle marmelos fruit contains alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids (8,926!g/mL), phenolic (3315!g/mL), total capacity of antioxidant test (IC-50=268,3484!g/mL), and LC-50=243,3169!g/mL. The catalase’s specific activity decreases with increasing duration of hypoxia. The catalase’s specific activity of blood and heart in groups are given Aegle marmelos fruit extract are higher than the control group. There is a correlation between the catalase’s specific activity of the blood and heart in both group. Cardiac histopathology shows fibrosis. Aegle marmelos fruit has antioxidant activity and toxic for mitotic cells.
