Abstract

Online Games (OLG) is a potential obstacle in the growth of Indonesian children's academic achievement. OLG have negative effects to its user (for example; aggresivity). The purpose of this research is to investigate the school's protective factor that can affect its student' habit of playing OLG. Benard (1991) points out that school play a large role in forming the life of its student, usually through three protective factors, which is caring and support, high expectations, and youth involvement. These three factors will be investigated using qualitative methods at two middle-high school in Salatiga, Furthermore, the third year student's habit of playing OLG will be measured using OLG addiction scales and a few survey questions. The measurement result showed significance difference in the students' habit of palying OLG at all of the indicators used. school B students (N=57) play OLG more often than School A students (N=75). In addition, the result of investigating the protective factors of the schools only release a difference of the 'high expectation' factor. Hence School B students play OLG more often because their teachers do not have high expectation for them. Contradictory to student at School A who are always given loads of assignment and is viewed as generally top students in a city, a higher achiever. This research suggest government to make school give loads of assignment and make sure that their teacher have high expectations of their students, so that their OLG habit can be reduced. In addition, several more strategies that can be applied to improve the 'high expectation' factor is discussed
