Abstract

It has been commonly assumed that people with different cultural background have different way in using digital technology. This study aims to predict the next generation's behavior in utilizing ICT (specifically internet and mobile technology) by describing current adolescent's behavior in two separate cities, i.e. Pontianak and Tegal, from two different island in Indonesia. Pontianak may represent West Borneo culture, while Tegal represent coastal Java culture. The adolescents behavior towards the adoption of ICT are explained with UTAUT2 (Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use Technology 2) (Vekatesh, Thong, & Xu, 2012). The total participant are 1072 junior high school students from Pontianak (N= 753) and Tegal (N=319). The participants from Pontianak and Tegal have relatively equal socio economic status. Data was collected through questionnaire general ICT usage frequency, UTAUT2 to measure the ICT utilization behaviors, and Indonesia adaptaion of European Social Survey measure Schwartz's basic value. The result shows that the age of using internet and mobile technology for the first time is earlier in Tegal than Pontianak. Furthermore, there are 9 ICT usage difference between Tegal and Pontianak participants (e.g mobile messengers services usage are more frequent in Tegal; while computer games, search engine, and computer based messenger services usage are more frequent in Pontianak). Additionally, the score for behavior intention to use ICT is higher among Pontianak participants, then Tegal participants. This differences on the use of ICT can be explained by Schwartz's cultural value. The dimension of stimulation and benevolence are higher in Tegal than Pontianak. These results are potential predictive assessment tool o how ICT came to be adopted by adolescents. Furthermore, it can also be formulated as part of requirements analysis for new ICT products development
