Abstract
Aphasia, a language disorder caused by damage to the language centers of the brain, affects a partion of stroke sufferers in Indonesia. While a standardized paper and pencil battery exists, aphasic speakers are often undiagnosed due to the limited availability of speech language therapists and experts who are able to assess aphasic symptoms, as they are available only in larger hospitals in more urbanized areas. Therefore, many who require language assessment and therapy only receive primary healthcare on the basis of their cerebrovascular accident. This study is a preliminary exploration on developing an alternative assessment method by way of a standardized digitized aphasia assessment battery for Standard Indonesian (SI) that can be administered by general caregivers and provide an insight to the aphasic symptoms as well as its severity and type. This current phase focuses on aphasia screening using an adapted test from TADIR: Dharmapewira-Prins, 1996, AAT: Graetz, de Bleser&Wilmes,1992, and a Sentence Comprehension study. The study involved 48 post-stroke older adults and non-brain damage individuals from nursing homes in T, Y, SM, U, and SO cities in Java, Indonesia, as participants. With this, the self-scoring test battery is expected to be able to provide language assessment as a foundation towards the procurement of computer-based automated advice on therapy and exercises for the rehabilitation of the aphasic patient.
