Abstract

The shape of the city becomes an indicator of human culture and civilization. Based on Cohen (2001), there are two things that should be recognized as characteristics of the historic district, namely: Aesthetic quality (human pleasure) and quality of history associated with the cultural symbol. Establishment of a spatial system physically is not separated from non physical aspects, such as: the norms, functions, and activities of the community. Both come to strengthen each other in creating a sense of place. Excerpted from Widodo (in Nas, 2009), the construction of the European cities structure in the colonial cities of the early period of the 20th century made the regions of indigenous settlements segmented and marginalized. While the Chinese community thriving because it has a key role in the economic system. The arrival of migrants from southern China (Fujian, Canton, Hainan, Hakka, etc.) to Southeast Asia since the 19th century to early 20th-century strengthen the development of urban architecture, one of that city is Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia.
