Abstract

Correlation Between Sleep Quality and Working Memory on Medical Students in Tarumanagara University Background: Sleep is an essential need for every living being. A study in the United States showed that 70% of college students do not get enough sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, young adults (aged 18-25 years) should get 7-9 hours of sleep daily. A study conducted on medical students stated that as many as 68.8% of students had poor sleep quality. Lack of sleep is known to cause structural changes in neural networks and impaired functional connections in the prefrontal cortex, which is the main part of the brain that plays a role in working memory. Objective: The general aim of this study is to determine the relationship between sleep quality and working memory in medical students aged 18-25 years. Methods: This research is a cross-sectional study with a sample of students from the Faculty of Medicine, Tarumanagara University aged 18-25 years. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, while working memory capacity data was collected using the Working Memory Questionnaire (WMQ). Data processing was carried out using the Paired Sample T-Test to determine the correlation between sleep quality and working memory. Results: 28.5% of respondents have good sleep quality and 71.65% of respondents have poor sleep quality. Respondents with poor sleep quality showed a higher mean of WMQ score (42.24) compared to respondents with good sleep quality (average score of 31.67). A higher WMQ score indicates more complaints on working memory. Correlation coefficient was found to be -0.233 and sig = 0.001 (p <0.05). Conclusion: There is a low-strength correlation with a negative direction between sleep quality and working memory.
