Abstract

Hookworms are a class of parasitic Nematodes that are transmitted through the soil, or Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH). Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale were the most common causes, and Ancylostoma braziliens and Ancylostoma caninum with dogs and cats as definitive host. Ancylostoma produces hyaluronidase enzymes which will damage the integrity of the dermis layer as the entry point for larvae into the skin. In people who are heavily infected, iron deficiency anemia can occur due to direct consumed by hookworms in the duodenum, then occur duodenal leakage. Around 470 million people worldwide are infected with Hookworm infection and it usually occurs in developing countries which directly causes economic losses. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between footwear habits and risk factors for hookworm infection. This research is an analytic observational with a cross sectional design with sequential sampling. The research subjects are 117 Tanjung Priok residents. The method of data collection is performed by filling out a questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of questions about age, gender, footwear habits, the type of footwear used, appropriate to going out of the house and community sanitation. The results of the Chi-square analysis showed significant results between footwear habits and the risk of hookworm infection (p=0.006), type of footwear with the risk of hookworm infection (p=0.005), but there was no significant relationship between gender and the risk of infection (p=0.005) p=1). The conclusion of this study is that footwear habits are associated with infectious infections consisting of community sanitation such as washing services after activities, soil conditions and availability of clean water as well as the intensity of leaving the house, to the incidence of mining infections experienced by respondents.
