Abstract

This study aims to determine the stock market reaction due to the COVID-19 pandemic that affects variosu areas of life in Indonesia, as well as its effects over the next year. The research design used is a descriptive study with purposive sampling method and resulted in 188 samples of transportation, consumer goods, and banking companis listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange for the first observation period and 125 samples of companies for the second observation period. Hypothesis testing was carried out using the non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed Ranked Test. The data in the study were processed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 28.0.0.0. The results showed that at the time of the announcement of the first positive confirmed case of COVID-19 in Indonesia, there was no significant difference in the average abnormal returns of transportation and banking stocks. Meanwhile, there is a significant difference in the average abnormal return of consumer goods driven by the explosion of panic buying among the public due to the announcement of the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. For the second observation period, the results of the study show that at the time of 2020 financial statements issuance, there is no significant difference in the average abnormal returns of transportation, consumer goods, and banking stocks. The shock to the company’s unsatisfying operations no longer shakes the stock market because Indonesian investors have started to adapt with COVID-19 pandemic situation Keywords: Event Study, COVID-19 Pandemic, and Abnormal Return
