Abstract
A steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich also known as 'Double Skin' or 'Dual Skin' composite (DSC) represents a special form of sandwich composite structure. Originated in civil / structural engineering applications, sandwich panels have been implemented in many industrial applications such as aerospace, marine, architectural and transportation industry. It is now being developed for ship building / offshore applications. It was clarified that the sandwich composite structure has various excellent properties: the ultimate load - bearing capacity of the sandwich composite structure is very high and it can absorb a great deal of energy until failure under any type of loading conditions. Sandwich panels attracted designer's interest due to its light weight, excellent corrosion characteristics and rapid installation capabilities. Sandwich panels consist of two face sheets and core. The steel plates connected to a sandwiched concrete core with welded shear connectors at discrete positions. The final structure acts compositely with the steel skins carrying either tension or compression, the concrete core carrying some compression and the connectors transferring both horizontal shear between layers and vertical shear across the section. The research trend is to introduce either a new shear connector system or a lightweight concrete. This thesis presents an alternative construction of steel-concrete-steel sandwich slab in which comprising a concrete core sandwiched in between two steel plates which are interconnected by J-hook connectors. Also the new concept design of the L-hook shear connector is proposed. The advantages of the J-hook and L-hook connectors that are capable of resisting tension and shear and their uses are not restricted by the concrete core thickness compare to Bi-Steel. Two sandwich slab specimens have been tested to evaluate the stiffness and flexural performance subjected to static and cyclic load. Theoretical model is developed to predict the flexural, shear capacity and elastic deflection considering partial composite and enable construction of sandwich structures with J-hook and L-hook connectors. The specimens also have been tested subjected to geophone test. The degradation of specimen’s stiffness and moment of inertia are compared due to the crack in the concrete core under increased load.
