Abstract
Abuse toward child is fairly uncommon in a family, but at present, the number of cases of child violence is increasing. Every child who experiences abuse will be exposed to variety of effects. One of the possible effects is interpersonal competency. Segrin (1999) defined interpersonal competence as an appropriate communication and interaction skills in dealing with people. Buhrmester, Furman, Wittenberg, dan Reis (1988) said that interpersonal competency consists of a number of aspects, namely initiative in developing relationship, ability to open one’s self, assertiveness, ability to give emotional support and ability to solve conflicts. The purpose of this research is to understand the interpersonal competency of child abused. This research involves three adolescences, consisting of two male and one female, with range of age 18-21 years old. These adolescence experienced violence/abuse in their family, but currently have been freed from the abuse. The research is qualitative and the data was gathered by interviewing the subject. The result of this research is that there is a lack of interpersonal competency in the subjects who experienced abuse during their childhood.
