Abstract

The problem discussed in this research is whether only children socialization ability in adolescence age of authoritative parenting style higher than authoritarian and permissive parenting style. Parenting style holds an important role in only children development, including the development of their socialization development. As children without brothers or sisters, their parents are their only place to obtain experience in learning how to interact (Hurlock, 1978). Parenting style is an intentional effort by parents to more effectively raise their children. Parenting style used in this research refers to three parenting style stated by Baumrind, which are authoritarian parents, permissive parents and authoritative parents. An adolescent's socialization ability is one's ability to adapt his/herself with friends, within the same or different age, having whether the same or opposite sex, according to the norm and values existing in adolescent environment (Papalia & Olds, 1995). In doing so, adolescents are not separable from their development task in their stage as stated by Havighurst. This research using quantitative method, uses questionnaires in obtaining data. The questionnaire is divided into two parts, which are the parenting style in multiple choice containing 26 items and the only children socialization ability in a Lickert attitude form containing 30 items. Questionnaires are distributed from March 20th until March 30th 1999. Using accidental sampling, 66 subjects according to the characteristics predetermined were obtained in five high schools in the region of Central and West Jakarta. Result obtained from data processed by one way analysis of variance (f test) is an F of 2,651 that is smaller than the F obtained from the table (3,15). This shows that the researches's hypothesis is rejected, showing no difference of only children socialization ability in adolescence age between authoritarian, permissive and authoritative parenting style. Thus there is a difference between field research and literary research. A few reasons that cause this difference are: (1) In this research, the factors considered are parenting style, while friend and school which have part in adolescent socialization process are ignored. (2) The influence of friends toward the socialization ability of the subjects in this research is greater than their parents. (3) Subjects tend to appear in their best form. Finally, it is advised for future researches that researcher added sum of subjects in a balanced proportion among parenting style, which are authoritarian, permissive and authoritative. Then scales are applied to measure the level of parenting style of the subject. Lastly, it is advised that further researches use qualitative method as well as quantitative method.
