Abstract

Nowadays, the role of mathematics in human life is undoubtedly important. Unfortunately, many people feel strong anxiety for mathematics. Moreover, this feeling has grown since they were still in primary school. With regard to the extremely important role of teachers in the development of their students in primary school, this research was focused on this problem: whether or not the primary school students' perception about their mathematics teachers' characteristic bears some relation to mathematics anxiety. This research was also meant to find which of the 3 aspects of teachers' characteristic, i.e. attitude, knowledge and skill, that is mostly related to mathematics anxiety. Using the theory of perception and anxiety, this research explained that anxiety may happen due to the wrong process of perception about an object. This object, that has caused some anxiety, will associate with other things which are neutral, that will also cause some anxiety in their turns, because of learning process. This research used the quantitative procedure, with SPSS 7.5 for windows for its statistic calculation. The data were gathered by using questionnaires that were composed based on the Likert Scale, while the respondents involved were 59 students. From the correlation calculation could be seen that there was a medium negative relation between the primary school students' perception about their teachers' characteristic and their mathematics anxiety. Using the significance of 5%, the corelation was —0,558 and signifinance at the 0,00 level, which meant that the more positive a student's perception about mathematics teachers, the lower the mathematics anxiety he or she has. Moreover, it could also be seen that the attitude aspect of teachers' characteristic was the one that was mostly related to mathematics anxiety in primary school compared to 2 other aspects, that is —0,5. This result met the theory that attitude has an direct effect on a person's behavior. For the teachers, especially the mathematics teachers, are suggested to be more careful with their characteristic while teaching, especially with their attitude. For the next research, it is highly suggested to add the number of respondents so that the result can be more generalized. In addition, it will be much better to include the students' ability in the next research as a controlling variable. Finally, it is also suggested to see further about the relation between students' perception and students' anxiety by using the qualitative method, that is through observation and interview.
