Abstract

Every parent generally expects his offspring to develop physically, mentally, as well as socially to the optimal level. Nonetheless, there are indeed a few constraints to it in as much as autistic children experience a problem in communication, social interaction and behavior. This research is aimed at responding to the attempts made by parents to guide autistic children to be able to develop their own lives optimally, that is, the development of a child's potential in accordance with his or her capacity. The theory used in this case is the motivation theory, particularly the expectation theory. The expectation theory says that motivation is not pushed from within by a variety of desires; instead, it is pulled from outside by the expectations to achieve a desired outcome. This research utilizes an in-depth interview with four respondents, all of whom are parents of autistic children aged between 4 and 7 years. The conclusion of this research is that the efforts made by respondents in guiding autistic children to grow optimally are drawn by the expectations that their children can interact, communicate and behave naturally so that they can be accepted by the society. To attain the expected result, parents should be involved in a number of activities and hard work based on the optimism that they will eventually make it. There are many things that parents can do to cope with their children's autism, for instance, by seeking more information through seminars, literature, Internet, etc. and by giving them a therapy to develop their cognitive, social, motoric, and communicative capabilities. Therefore, it is advised that parents never give up their efforts and find more information from seminars, books, intemet and also from parents who have managed to help develop the capabilities of their autistic children.
