Abstract

It is a difficult situation for a mother to have a deaf-mute child in the family, especially if the mother cannot accept and adapt with the child condition. This research tries to study the self adjustment of a mother who has a deaf-mute child. There are two theories used, the first one is "Stages Theory" from Opihory and Peters about emotional reaction from a mother who has a deaf-mute child. The stages are: Shock and Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. The second one is the problem of adjustment made the mothers who have deaf-mute children is Bronfenbrenner theory. Five contexts influence this adjustment are: The Ontogenic System — a system that emphasize on individual, while the other four are Human Ecological factor, which influence human development through four systems: The Microsystem (the self adjustment of the deaf-mute child's mother with family); The Exosystem (the self adjustment of the deaf-mute child's mother with the social environment outside the family); The Mesosystem (the self adjustment of the deaf-mute child's mother with school environment); and The Macrosystem (the self adjustment of the deaf-mute child's mother with the culture and society's values). This research uses qualitative method was conducted by using with depth interview to explore the self adjustment of the deaf-mute child's mothers. There are 4 (four) deaf-mute child mother who become respondents and they have a deaf-mute child under four years old. This interview was held within period of January 111h, 2001 until February 5th, 2001 at Taman Latihan "Santi Rama" school. The result of this research are: not all mothers went through all the five emotional stages. This is caused by the high religious level of respondents, enabling them to get to the acceptance stage in a short time by accepting God's will. While in the self adjustment result that use Bronfenbrenner theory only one respondent has difficulties at the beginning to adjust with the social environment. However, generally, all the respondents can adjust well. The suggestion for doing further research should pay attention to the problem of self adjustment mother while the child continuing develop until the child has grown up. For the mother who has a deaf-mute child, it is suggested to be able to accept the child in the family and build a relationship with the school to deal with difficulties in interacting with the deaf-mute child.
