Abstract

Aircraft cabin environment is a different than other working environment. There are some particular factors in the flight cabin that may influence physiological, psychological, and behavioral of the cabin attendants during a flight. Some of the factors cause stress to the flight attendants. This research tries to explain particular stressor, stress reaction, and coping behavior of the cabin attendants in dealing with stress. This research discusses stress based on Selye's stress theory. In analyzing coping behavior this research utilized Lazarus and Folkman's coping stress on problem-focused coping and emotion focused coping. The results of data analysis explained that respondents were used problem-focused coping when they had interpersonal problem such as passengers and partners. They also used problem focused coping when physiological problem appeared. For example they used such as medicine, herbs, and vitamins to reduce pain, they were on strict diets, they experienced problems in menstrual period, and body fitness. When they felt they were unable to cope with the stress any longer, such as aircraft environment, cabin facilities, flight schedules, career ladder, physiological problem, and personal problem; they tended to use emotion-focused coping. This research used depth-interviewed methods. The interview process was held within two months period, from November 9th 2000 to January 20th 2001. Four respondents participated: they were classified as junior cabin attendants, single, age range about 27 to 28 years old, and had minimum seven years experience working as cabin attendants. Finally, this research could be valuable for cabin attendants. Their awareness on stressor and stress situation led them to cope with the stress much better. Depth research to all cabin attendants coping behavior suggested in following research.
