Abstract

AIDS is a form of terminal illness that has detrimental effect to human life. Scientists and researchers have struggled to find the cure, yet success has been very limited. AIDS is associated not only with medical problems but with psychological, social, and economic problems as well. As a form of terminal illness, AIDS is considered as an incurable disease, and the patients who suffer from the illness must deal with the specific condition to anticipate death. Kubler-Ross' Stages of Dying theory explained the five specific stages a person must experience in facing death: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. This research tried to explore the dynamics of the emotion of two HIV/AIDS patients in anticipating death. This research utilized in depth interview to obtain data, and the result indicated that one respondent did not experience the entire stages of dying as the theory stated, and another one experienced the stages but in different succession. This research also obtained other information. First, limited knowledge of subject about HIV/AIDS may influence subject to conduct HIV/AIDS risk behavior. Second, subjects ability to disclosure their illness was influenced by the way they got the virus. Subject who got the disease associated with injecting drugs tended to be more hesitant than subject who got the disease associated with blood transfusion in disclosing the experience of being HIV contaminated. Third, family support may increase an individual immune system in dealing with illness.
