Abstract

People need a good state of mental health in order to perform normal functioning and to play their roles in a society. Maslow has stated about the characteristics of mentally healthy person. This research was conducted to reveal and explore the benefits of breathing mindfulness meditation as one of treatment modalities in maintaining and improving a person's mental health state. Data collection of this qualitative research conducted by in depth interview and observation was conducted from Mei 2004 to August 2004. Four subjects were involved in this research. They were two males and two females (age 25-42 years) who regulary and consecutively conducted breathing mindfulness meditation for one month or more. All subjects reported that breathing mindfulness meditation was beneficial to their both physical and mental health. Results indicated that subjects' mental health conditions are parallel with the characteristics of mental health according to Maslow.
