Abstract
Old age is a susceptible period of loneliness. Losing the spouse, separation with children, and losing friends are contributing factors of loneliness during old age. Developing friendship with other is a way to reduce loneliness. But, when friends are gone, having pet such as dogs may replace friendship with peer group. Pet dogs can become friends to the owners. Pet dogs can stimulate friendship atmosphere associated with care, faith, protection, relaxing atmosphere and acceptance. This qualitative research is exploring how old age people overcome their loneliness by having pet dogs based on theory of loneliness (Peplau & Perlman), emptiness syndrome and theory of needs (Murray). Data collection was conducted by depth interview on 4 old age subjects who have had pet dogs minimal for 2-3 years, and interview was taken between June to September 2004 . All subjects reported that having pet dogs helped them to overcome with loneliness. They talked with the dogs, caress the dogs, sleep with the dogs and spend time with their dogs as their companions and friends.
