Abstract

Loneliness is a feeling that really hurts for people that experience it, especially for late adulthood women who that stay in a nursing home. Their resources that are used to overcome loneliness often are very low. Therefore , self adjustment becomes an important thing to do, so then late adulthood women will be able to overcome their problems and be able to life peacefully. According to Haber and Runyon (1984), there are some characteristics that have to be owned by late adulthood women in order to be able to adjust effectively. The characteristics are having accurate perception to the reality, having an ability to overcome stress and anxiety, having a positive self image, having an ability to express their feeling, and also having good interpersonal relationship. The purpose of this research is to examine the efforts that have been done by late adulthood women that stay in a nursing home to overcome loneliness. The method that is used to gather the data is in-depth and direct interviews based on Mental Status Examination (MSE). The data is gathered on December 3, 2003 until February 16, 2004. This research involves five late adulthood women in ages older than 65 years old (elderly). The result of this research shows that all late adulthood women that had been examined, were able to adjust when they experience loneliness in their nursing home by drawing near to God and build positive hopes of their future.
