Abstract

This research aimed to find out type of coping used by street boys in handling stress caused by physical abuse. On the street, boys are the vulnerable victim of abuse from everyone, including from the authority. Abuse that mostly happened and easy to identify is physical abuse, such as beating, fighting, and others that cause victim feel pain or even injured. When someone consider abuse experienced as an exaggerate burden beyond his capability and threaten his well being, it cause victim feel pressure/stress . To survive on the street, street boys (victim) must develop a strategy by doing action to restrain problem they have. This research took six months to be done, starting 14th of July 2004 and finish 22nd of September 2004.The coping theory used in this research is folkman, et al. (1986). Using qualitative methods, the research result from four street boys, age 10-18 years, show tendency that street boys restrain stress from physical abuse by seeking social support, escape-avoidance , and distancing.
