Abstract

Design management is often underutilized in the furniture industry, especially in Indonesia. This is very visible in the furniture industry in Jepara, Central Java, where many companies prefer to use designs provided by their buyers rather than developing their own designs. In fact, Indonesia has many potential designers who have not been utilized optimally.
Objective - This research aims to develop a design management model that can be implemented in the local furniture industry, with the hope of increasing added value and strengthening industrial management. According to Kathryn Best, design management includes aspects of strategy and vision, process and tactics, as well as operations and implementation.
Research Method - The methodology used is qualitative with a case study approach, namely in the furniture industry in Jepara. Data was collected through interviews and observations with industry players in Jepara, namely: business owners or managers related to design in companies, as well as carving experts.
Research data analysis was carried out using an interactive analysis model, which is an iterative analysis process to ensure the results are as expected.
Research findings – This research shows that the furniture industry in Jepara currently does not interact much with design principles. Therefore, researchers propose a model. The proposed model includes a design management strategy that is integrated with Jepara's local strengths as a carving city. A designer is needed
who can be a bridge between carving craftsmen and the furniture industry to create products that have added value and are competitive.
Originality - This research proposes the implementation of this model to develop design potential in the furniture industry in Jepara, so as to increase the quality and selling value of products. Through this research, it is hoped that an effective design management framework can be formed to support the sustainable growth of the furniture industry in Jepara and can be adopted in other similar industries in Indonesia.
