Abstract
The smallest world for every individual is their family. A positive or healthy family ensures its members’ safety, comfort, and support. However, not all children have the opportunity to experience such a family, especially those raised in single-parent households due to divorce. Children from single-parent families as a result of divorce may face challenges related to family activities. The single-parent condition can arise from divorce, the death of a spouse, or children born out of wedlock. This study aims to explore the experience of loneliness among early adult women who grew up in single-parent families due to divorce. The research employs a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews with four participants aged 18–25 years who meet the study criteria. Data analysis was conducted to identify the factors, causes, and impacts of loneliness experienced by participants across social, emotional, and situational dimensions. The findings reveal that loneliness in early adult women is influenced by limited social support, challenges in adjusting to changes in family structure, and a sense of loss in meaningful relationships with others. This loneliness impacts their emotional, social, and situational well-being. In the emotional dimension, participants experienced difficulty expressing their feelings to others. In the social dimension, some participants faced challenges in socializing with others, while in the situational dimension, certain participants struggled to adapt to unfamiliar environments and being in one parent’s home. The study underscores the importance of social support and a conducive environment to minimize the effects of loneliness for individuals from single-parent families due to divorce. These findings can serve as a foundation for designing psychological interventions to improve the emotional, social, and situational well-being of early adult women with divorced parents living in single-parent households.
