Abstract

This paper described the design and manufactureofthe sixth prototipe of hybrid electric vehicle in the Department of Mechanical Engineering UniversitasIndonesia. The design concept of control system for electric hybrid vehiclewas improved using fully electronic smart controller system to combine effectively the power of an internal combustion enginewith electric motor. The design stage was started from 3D-CAD chassis model including of the drive train system in combination of serial-parallel and the selection of microcontroller based on the traction control system available.In the manufacturing process laboratory, we used conventional production machineto build a tubular steel main frame and numerical machine for the precision components of the vehicle. Thevehicle componentwasdesignedand manufactured based on the capability of workingfacility and the availabilitymaterial in the local market. Two 0,5 kW/48 VDC brushless electric motors whichembedded on each rear rim wheelwas usednot only as a traction motor but also as a generator during deceleration period (regenerative system).A single cylinder of internal combustion engine integrated with continous variable transmisionwasselectedto deliver 6.54 kW of engine powerto the rear wheels usingdirectly two free-wheel sprockets gear drive.In order to boost the charging system during engine operation, an additional 350 Watt automobile alternator was installed to the engine. Static testing of vehicle was conductedbased on the function of each system, including performance data of power transferon both propulsion drive system whichis collectedusing a serial interfacing comunication from microcontroller to a portable computer. Thestatic testgive a goodresultand show that the combination of power transfer between engine and electrical motor couldwork properly and smoothlyas indicated onthe graphic of constant speed between wheel and engine rotation.
