Abstract

The aim of this research is to know the relationship between shame and loneliness on people with physical disabilities in Jakarta. People with physical disability tend to feel shame from social interaction because of their physical appearance. Shame begins since adolescents enter the maturity and interact with peers. It is assumed that shame can cause loneliness. In this study 31 respondents with physical disability whose age are between 12 years old to 55 years old, they filled in self-report questionnaires designed to measure varied aspects of shame and loneliness. This research employ UCLA Loneliness Scale version 3 to examine the loneliness and OAS (Other as Shamer Scale) to examine the shame. The subjects in this study were 31 respondents drawn using purposive or formal reference. Results also showed that shame and loneliness has a positive and significant correlation (r = 0,623 dan p = 0,000 < 0,05). The score of shame and loneliness on the respondents was considered high.
