Abstract
Previous studies have gained some inconsistent result regarding the effect of music on reading comprehension. This study aimed to examine the effects of lyrical and instrumental music on reading comprehension of second grade students in School X. This study used experimental between-subject design with randomized blocked one-way anova. Participants (N= 12,) were divided into three groups equally which are: experimental group who listen to instrumental music, experimental group who listen to lyrical music of the same title, and a control group of no music. Participants did the reading comprehension exercise consisted of 10 multiple-choice questions which was taken from their English language syllabus. The result showed that there was no significant difference of reading comprehension scores among the lyrical, instrumental, and no music group
