Abstract

Children with borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) possess academic and behaviour drawbacks. Academically, they stumble upon catching up with school lessons which are appropriate with their age-level. Previous research has placed more focus on academic instead of behaviour problems. A number of intervention programs have been created in order to improve the mastery of lessons by children with BIF. However, behaviour problems which are also frequently confronted by teachers, have not yet received much interest. Behaviour problems, such as teasing friends, walking or screaming in class, are instances of disruptive behaviour. This research aims to decrease disruptive behavior, particularly walking in class, and increase writing behavior by using differential reinforcement of incompatible behaviour (DRI) technique in children with BIF. The technique requires a specification of incompatible behaviour to decrease a particular unwanted behaviour. The incompatible behaviour in this research is writing behaviour which can decrease walking behaviour. The participant of this research is a 9 year-old girl who sits in grade 3. It takes a total of 16 days to conduct the therapy process – starting from baseline, treatment, and withdrawal phase. Some instruments used are WISC test, interview guidelines, and frequency as well as amount of words data sheet. The result shows that participant demonstrates a decline in walking behaviour and an increase in writing behaviour. The more amount of words she writes, the lesser the frequency of walking behaviour is. Hence, the use of DRI technique is capable to decrease walking behavior and increase writing behaviour.
