Abstract

Many this may cause a woman works as a prostitute. Failure in maintaining marital relationships and economic pressure are some of the main reasons for some women to choose working as a prostitute. Although working as a prostitute is considered violating social norms and morality, a prostitute women feel they cannot detach themselves from such kind of social environment. Therefore, they need adjustment to live in the society. This research is aimed at finding answers on how a prostitute women adjust themselves in conducting their daily life. This qualitative research uses healthy adjustment theory (Haber & Runyon, 1984). Data collection was conducted by in depth interview within the time frame of 6 months. Three married women and two widows participated as research subjects. Results indicate that all subjects tend to cover up their jobs in order to avoid social isolation. All subjects tend to choose passive rather active adjustment, and they pretend as if things are going well as normal. Based on Haber and Runyon's adjustment theory (1984), these women*s adjustment processes do not meet the overall characteristic of viable adjustment.
