Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between conformity and motivation for smartphone use in students. At this time the use of mobile phones is normal. The development of technologies such as communication devices, especially smartphones, can be influenced by groups of peers. This research was conducted at x private universities in Jakarta. The sample of this study amounted to 242 subjects aged 17-20 years and using smartphones. This study uses convenience sampling data collection techniques. The results of this study indicate that there is a relationship between conformity and extrinsic motivation in students in smartphone use. The main data analysis used Spearman correlation and obtained results r = 0.398 and p = 0,000 <0.05. From the analysis of the relationship between dimensions of conformity and motivation, it can be seen that conformity variables have a significant relationship with extrinsic motivation, whereas between conformity and intrinsic motivation there is no significant relationship.
