Abstract

Choosing a religion for adolescents who are brought up by parents with different religions is difficult. This is caused by the two different religious education given from each parent. This research aims for giving an overview of identity status in adolescents from interfaith marriages, especially Catholic and Islam religions. Adolescence is the time to look for one's own identity, which includes religious identity (Papalia, Olds, & Feldman, 2009). Adolescents will perform exploration, which is experimenting new things. If an adolescent have passed exploration period, they will make their own commitments. Identity status in adolescents can be observed from their exploration period and commitments they have made (Santrock, 2011). The experiences in the exploration period and the decisions to commit will determine the identity status of an adolescent. An in-depth-interview was conducted on four adolescents reaching young adults (aged 18 to 21 years old), whom was raised in an interfaith marriage environment, specifically concerning Catholic and Islam religion The research spanned over four month of execution, from March 2014 until June 2014. The result of this study shows that three out of four subjects identity status is identity achievement because they have experienced a period of exploration and has a commitment to run the religion of their choice.
