Abstract
Adjustment needed by a mother who came from the Minangkabau ethnic customs still hold that follows the maternal system and require girls as successor to the family lineage. The theory used to analyze the adjustment using the study by Haber and Runyon (1984). The purpose of this study was to look at the adjustment in mothers who doesn’t have a daughter and do not have children in ethnic Minangkabau. The study subjects consisted of five mothers with an age range of middle adulthood. Data is collected between the months of August to October 2012. The results of the study are all subject characteristics of effective adjustment is fulfilled in two areas: the ability to cope with stress and good interpersonal relations. Besides the factors that influence the adjustment in each subject that psychological factors and social support received from family, friends, and relatives. Based on the adjustment phase, all subjects through a dynamic phase adjustment, only three subjects were eventually able to reach the stage of acceptance.
