Abstract
Bullying experience in school usually give negative outcomes to the victims. One of the negative outcomes is lowered self-esteem, especially for adolescents because friends acceptance is one of the major factor that influence their self-esteem. Feeling left out and blame themselves, some of the victims killed themselves. However, some of them faced bullying as a way to improve themselves. Therefore, finding the adaptive coping strategy is very important for victims to prevent the negative outcomes. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between cognitive coping strategies and self-esteem in adolescents with bullying experience in school, also to determine the adaptive and maladaptive strategies. Participants were 160 adolescents, age 14 to 18 years with 1 or more bullying experience at least 2 or 3 times in the past month. The result showed that self-blame, catastrophizing, rumination, and acceptance have a negative relationship with self-esteem, considered as maladaptive strategies for adolescents with bullying experience in school, especially in relation to their self-esteem. Refocus on planning, positive refocusing, and positive reappraisal have positive relationship with self-esteem, considered as adaptive strategies.
