Abstract

The prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia based on a measurement that has been conducted on citizens of ≥ 18 years old is 34%. A person is classified as hypertension if they have blood pressure ≥140 / 90 mmHg. Physical inactivity or sedentary lifestyle is one of the risk factors for hypertension and is also the fourth risk factor for 6% of global deaths. Profession also influences a person's risk of developing hypertension. For example, being a teacher consumes a lot of time and energy so the time for physical activity is reduced. Therefore the researcher intends to examine the relationship of physical activity patterns with the incidence of hypertension in teachers, especially in Makassar City. The design of this study was an analytic cross-sectional study and used consecutive non-random sampling techniques. The study was conducted from the end of May to the beginning of June 2020 and received 81 study respondents. The results found 47 teachers were in the category of pre-hypertension (58%), 15 people were in stage 1 hypertension (18.5%) and 1 person was in stage 2 hypertension category (1.2%). More than 60% of respondents have a lack of activity patterns with a total of 49 people, 18 respondents (22.2%) with sufficient physical activity and 14 respondents (17.2%) with good physical activity. There was no significant relationship between physical activity and hypertension (p value = 0.596). However, physical activity is a protective factor against hypertension because PR <1 (PR = 0.929).
