Abstract

The construction of the European cities structure in the colonial cities of the early period of the 20th century made ​​the regions of indigenous settlements segmented and marginalized. While the Chinese community thriving because it has a key role in the economic system. The arrival of migrants from southern China (Fujian, Canton, Hainan, Hakka, etc.) to Southeast Asia since the 19th century to early 20th-century strengthen the development of urban architecture, one of that city is Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. Surakarta has urban typologies and urban architectural typically. The river plays a major role as a transportation network for trade and the establishment of settlements and the structure of space in the city. Settlement among traders has always been at the river mouth. One of the communities that establish the urban structure of Surakarta is a settlement of Chinese community (Pecinan), which has existed since the era of the kingdom of Mataram. This study aims to trace the development of the Chinese community (Pecinan) in the city of Surakarta in the structure of urban space and its determining indicators using the synchronic-diachronic reading as a method. Factors will be studied are the ecological factor, economic, political, and socio-cultural through 3 indicator: Kelenteng, shop houses, and settlement by grand gang. It is known that the existence of Chinese communities (Chinatowns/Pecinan) in Surakarta going on since civilization of Bengawan Solo river in Mataram Kartasura period through trading activities. The biggest change occurred in the interval 1857-1900 with the coming of tram transportation system. The tram was originally only carry the European communities, then become a means of public transportation and changing trade flows initially rely on the river -which also began to experience the silting- total switch to ground. Revocation the rules of occupancy according to ethnic grouping (wijkenstelsel) from the Dutch that set Chinese community of Surakarta to stay in one complex in Balong and enforcement of permit revocation (passenstelsel) became one of the background of the Chinatown/Pecinan development in Surakarta. Thus, the first Chinatown centered in Balong began to flourish in the city center close to the tram lines, and eventually form a new Chinatown in Tambak Segaran, Coyudan, and Nonongan with Kelenteng, shophouses, and settlement.
