Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe moral education in four faith-based schools in Jakarta. The study examined issues related to basic concepts in moral education and character values which were applied at the schools. Qualitative descriptive study was conducted using in-depth interviews. The aim of moral education in the school was analyzed using Peterson and Seligman (2004) categorizations. Results showed that the schools applied moral education through hidden curriculum. Referring to Peterson and Seligman's (2004) character categorization. there were only three out of six main characters was taught in all of the four schools, namely motivation (courage), humanity and transcendence. The three other characters were thought in two or three schools, but not in the other. Methods used in character education at the schools were exemplary methods, role playing, environmental management, direction, assignment and habituation.
